THE KENYA LOST CHILDREN FUND
DANIEL
When I first met Daniel at Nairobi Children’s Home, he was a handful. Nairobi Children’s Home is a chaotic place, with each kid fighting for himself. As one of the older boys there, Daniel was often in charge. He was generally uninterested in following instructions from adults. Nevertheless, he had an obvious desire to learn. He was one of two boys who could read. Whenever there was class-time, taught by volunteers of course, Daniel would ask for a book because he wanted to read. Reading was the only time Daniel would sit still. He particularly enjoyed reading out loud to the kids who crowded around him to listen.
Updates from 2024:
Daniel is currently in college, studying automotive engineering at Mathenge Technical Training Institute in Nyeri Kenya. When asked about his studies he lights up; he can talk endlessly about his love of cars and how to fix them. This year he represented his school at a nationwide engineering competition. He presented an original design automotive lift designed with a bicycle chain, for mechanics unable to afford an expensive hydraulic lift for cars. Next year he will complete his Automotive Engineering certificate. He hopes to one day open an automotive garage of his own and to be known across Kenya for his engineering innovations.
