COST DETAILS

Tuition and board. the school year runs from January to December. There are 3 terms. (January to March, May to August, October to December) Between school terms the children return to the Government Children’s Home. Gacio Academy is ranked as one of the top 500 schools in Kenya and is proud of its high performance on the K.C.P.E. (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education). A high score on the K.C.P.E. enables a student to gain admission to a good high school. Gacio Academy includes computer skills in the curriculum even though this is not standard practice in Kenya. The children are very competitive about being top in their class and routinely receive some of the highest marks among their classmates. Last year, Daniel was named head boy for his grade.

Field trips and visiting days. Field trips and visiting days – Each term there are designated “visiting days” during which family members visit their children at Gacio. Charity acts as a parent to all the kids, bringing them treats on visiting days as well as small prizes for those who have done exceptionally well. Gacio also takes the kids on cultural field trips. Last year the younger ones visited Nairobi National Park and saw wild animals.

Guardianship. Charity acts as the children’s guardian. She is someone the children can confide in if they are having a problem at school. The children love her dearly and affectionately call her Auntie Charity. It is through Charity that Rachael keeps updated on the children’s progress.

Dental and medical. Before being sponsored few, if any, of the children had ever owned a toothbrush. Many of the children have tooth decay and require fillings and regular visits to the dentist. Gacio does not cover medical expenses and although Gacio Academy and Charity keep the kids as healthy as possible, ear infections, sprained ankles and other illnesses do arise.

Mattress, bedding and clothing. the children are required to bring their own mattress and bedding. They also need dress shoes, athletic shoes, gumboots, jacket, undies, pajamas and toiletries – none of which are individually owned at the government home, and which they leave at school between terms.

Transport. The boarding school is at a distance from the government homes and transportation to and from school is rather expensive.

Bank transfer fees. fees needed to transfer money to Kenya.

School supplies. All supplies (from uniforms to books to pencils) have to be bought for the children.
